Ordered 24" White iMac and 80GB iPod For $1229
« on: October 08, 2007, 04:40:30 PM »
I just ordered a brand new white 24" 2.16 Ghz iMac and a previous generation black 80GB Classic iPod for a total of $1229 including shipping. Previously such deals were only available to U of O students, staff and alumni, but recently the policy was changed to allow the general public to purchase previous Apple models.  The iMac comes with a $149 iPod credit that can be used to get a free iPod valued at $149 or less, or the credit can be applied to a more expensive iPod, which is what I chose to do. The credit only applies to previous model iPods. I have a 40GB non-photo iPod in mint condition (VERY lightly used) that I will now be selling... Ditto my 20" G5 3rd generation iMac.

And Yes, they will ship.  It generally takes 2-3 days for the computer to be shipped.

This means that I am abandoning buying a 15" MacBook Pro.  I think that I have solved the ergonomic problem that kept me from considering getting a new iMac. I saved quite a bundle by going the iMac route.  thumbup.gif

Gregg:

Think of it as a good way to reduce your dilemma (anxiety?) over last week's Illini surprise!   thumbup.gif

Gregg, this is the best Mac deal that I have ever seen. Consider that the original retail price was $1999 and that the $1099 sale price includes a $149 iPod credit, so the price of the iMac is effectively $950. You can always sell the iPod if you don't want it... (Other great deals that I have seen in the past four years or so was $649 for a new 12" G4 iBook and $579 for 20" G5 iMacs, both available only to students and alumni of universities.)

The process for ordering the computer is a little different than usual... You call them up and they will fax you an invoice copy and a credit card authorization form.  You fill out and sign the form and fax it back to them. The salesperson told me that the iMacs are selling fast. The models with wireless keyboards and mice are All Gone.

Thank yew, thank yew very much...  notworthy.gif

My motivation in posting this wasn't to brag about my good fortune... I was hoping that a fellow TSer who is in the market for a new Mac might see the thread and be able to get in on the deal...

The iMac sale is still listed on the U of O Bookstore Web site, so there is a chance that there are still some 24" iMacs left.

You just put a Christmas idea into my head:  My brother is a teacher and he needs a new iMac, I dont 'need' but I 'want' a 24 inch new one, so if he ordered mine thru his discount thing, and I paid for it, and I gave him this one, would that be cricket?  He says that he really doesnt need a new one, as he just retired, but I just know he would love this 20 inch one here.
Though I really really want to support my local Mac store as they are wonderful and did a repair for me and didnt charge me a cent.
But if the savings were enough, I would be tempted.
(Perhaps I should look into this, after we get our puppy, as I might not have time for playing with a new 24 iMac for a while.)
You people here are always giving me ideas, I love it!
Thanks,
Jane

FWIW. Mayo, this is the machine I've had this year and it has been an unalloyed pleasure.

How much ram are you getting? The more the better, and I expect now that prices for it are down. Get the U to install 2 gigs if they will, otherwise check OWC.

And smile!

The Beast arrived this afternoon... it was waiting for me next to the front door.  It had a rather nasty hole that went through the exterior shipping box and the interior iMac box.  So I took a few pics and a little movie before I opened the sucker, Just In Case. I once had to pursue an insurance claim with UPS when a "word processor" (remember those???) arrived DOA.  The adjuster took one look at the machine and the box and simply said "It obviously dropped from a very great height" and signed-off on the claim. I figured that it couldn't hurt to document the condition of the box. Aren't digital cameras cool?

As I am typing this on the new iMac, you can assume that it was undamaged. I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything from a cloned volume on an external drive (the G5 iMac's Firewire ports haven't worked in over a year...) and it took maybe a half hour to transfer the data. Much quicker than I remember... 5-10 drivers and preferences didn't make it over, so it will take less than 60 minutes to make things right by the time I'm done.

I have 3GB RAM arriving from OWC tomorrow. It cost around $130.  With my usual compliment of open apps 1GB of RAM is noticeably slow. Otherwise it is no different from my 20" iMac. Using Migration Assistant really changes the new computer experience... no more hours of configuring, installing software and tweaking a new Mac. Life Is Good. The iMac is rather large. I keep some binoculars handy so that I can easily see the upper-right corner of the monitor... The 20" is right next to it for the moment as it awaits decomissioning so the difference in size is very apparent.

Jane, I spoke with someone at the university bookstore about that very issue and he said that once the person buys a Mac through them it is theirs to do what they want with it... Apple doesn't track the serial numbers or anything like that. Free will triumphs! Your karma is safe.

BTW, the black iPod is Very Cool Looking. I haven't really paid any attention to them since we got one a couple of years ago. They have gotten rather sleek looking, haven't they? I'm going to connect it and transfer some music to it as soon as I am done with this...

Hi Mayo,  Thats good news, I will see if my brother wants to do this.  He should be home from Maine sometime this week. I would probably want to get the AppleCare if I didnt get it from my local store.
Our family seems to have a lot of old Macs, maybe we need to have some more grandkids!  I did find a home for my old G3 powerbook, a TS person!  I was sooooo glad to see it go to a good home.

Yes, digital cameras are sure amazing, one of my kids and I got into a car accident in Maine in August, and I took a bundle of pictures in case we needed them.  The policeman asked if I would email some to him, so easy isn't it.

On our local NE TV news, very early every morning our weather guy, Matt Noyes, has a 5 minute section where you can send your weather related pictures to him and he puts the best ones on.  They sure look great on our new Samsung 40 LCD.
Speaking of that, we chose our new TV on the recommendations from you all here!  TS is giving Consumer Report magazine a run for the money.
I dont buy anything electronic before asking you all here about it first.
Thanks,
Jane
