I followed the Mac help instructions for taking a screenshot of a window. It took the shot but then instructions say the saved file is on the startup disc. I have about 50 items with the word "startup" but I can't find "startup disc." Help.

Your desktop is a ƒolder on your startup disk (or boot drive); that is to say the hard drive or partition that you are running the Operating System from whenever you boot your Mac.

Re: Using key commands to take pictures -- each operating system uses a different naming scheme, e.g picture1, picture2, OR screenshot1, screenshot2, etc.
Go to Finder Preferences (under "Finder" on top left of screen adjacent to the Apple) and select the 3rd tab.  check DESKTOP.

Now via the Finder sidebar you can click to access your desktop screenshots if you do not see them on your Finder desktop.

I suspect that your desktop is highly cluttered.

Here is some unsolicited but invaluable advice:

The desktop is a ƒolder within your Users ƒolder.
BUT, it has one special characteristic that no other ƒolder has.
OS X allocates RAM to every file, folder, icon, etc. that exists there.
To free up RAM and to speed up boot time (disabling extraneous fonts helps a lot too) and to speed up Finder operations in general, create a ƒolder at Root Level on the boot volume of your Mac's Hard Drive.  Name it "Desktop Detritis" or whatever you wish.  Move everything from your desktop there, and move applications to the Applications ƒolder.   Then drag that folder to the right side of your Dock.   Voila.

There is a very good book called "Degunking Tiger" that describes this and many many more tips like it.
Also I suggest using xSlimmer to regain a ton of space on your hard drive. Also I use (either) "Omni Disc Sweeper" 1.5.2  or "WhatSize" 10.3.92 to show me the HUGE invisible files that are clogging my Macs,  e.g. huge Swap Files. If you use Adobe applications or do heavy duty work in Desktop Publishing, Photographic work, Graphic Images, MIDI, etc. you may have invisible Scratch Disks of a Gigabyte or two in size. I also use FileBuddy9 or TidyUp! to search out duplicate files and delete them.

Should be at the root level on your HD, Goodear, called Picture1 and so on - if you're using the key combos that save to the HD. You may be saving to the clipboard...I did that in OS X and then couldn't figure out where my screenshots were! http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=12555If you save to the clipboard, you just paste the screenshot where you want it to go - or into Photoshop or Graphic Converter for editing. In OS X, depending on what you do, it can be on the clipboard or on the desktop. Taking screenshots in OS X - a handy little guide. smile.gif

Flash, Goodear is using OS 9, so he can't use the apps you've suggested. smile.gif Also - please don't post repeatedly when you can't see your post - you're still on moderator approval. I just happened to be online at the same time as you and have therefore read and approved your posts quickly.

Flash is correct about not leaving too much on the desktop as it can slow things down. But I am guilty of dragging things off the browser windows to the desktop. Now I make a folder for that kind of stuff and drag to the folder. Makes it much more tidy.

And I created a folder for screenshots. Thing is I don't remember how I got the usual key strokes to save to that folder and not to the main drive. Thinking.gif

I have my computer set so all screenshots save to the desktop.  Always listed as picture 1, I rename it immediately.  Then I remember it is the picture I just took.

Goodear, if you follow the directions in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=12555 you'll be able to locate your screenshot in the Finder. Then highlight it (don't open it - just highlight the name "Picture 1") and rename it. smile.gif

Or you can purchase SnapzPro and do all sorts of stuff with screenshots, but thats not really necessary.

Just follow kcourt's instructions and be sure to rename them before you forget what they are.
Paddy's link is great too, but dont bother to save them to the clipboard, the desktop is the best.
You can group them all together and click on one and you can see them all at once.
Screenshots are so valuable, I use them all the time with my lessons.

Was hoping someone would come up with how to get the screenshots to be saved to a folder.

I had been doing it this way for so long I can't remember where or how it started. This is by using the regular Apple key strokes, not using any third party app.

However,  I also have Snap n Drag which I find to be pretty convenient since you can rename the image immediately in a separate window and choose your type of file at the same time.

BTW, their "Bundle"of apps is a good deal. Several little, helpful programs at a reasonable price. smile.gif

That is a great idea, to have them all go into a specific folder on the desktop.  Mine seem to always pop up in the upper right of my screen, so I never have to hunt for them, but having them all in one folder would be better.  I think I will make a bright folder icon out of a flower or something that will catch my eye.
Great Idea!  Thank you, smile.gif

I guess your desktop is a tad neater than mine, Jane!  whistling.gif

Right now, mine is a prime candidate for the "sweep everything into a folder and see if we miss any of it" technique! (Sort of like putting things in the attic for two years, and if you didn't need any of it during that time, it's time to throw it all out/give it away!)

Thats what we have been doing to our HOUSE this last week, getting rid of everything(well not throwing it away, but packing and giving to our kids, or the thrift shop), as we have been 'puppy-proofing' everything.
Jane

Edit, Add, Now this is wierd, doesnt give me the option of a folder on the desktop, darn, that would be really nice.
Here is a scrreenshot to show why, these folders that I am given the option of using, are really really old stuff in iPhoto.
Thats too bad, it would have been wonderful.

wallbash.gif Well, I wish my home were as neat as my desktop - they found mold in our common walls (I live in a townhouse) and so I have everything moved out of the kitchen, and all over my home.  The only rooms that are clean and neat right now are the bathrooms.  jawdrop.gif   I am so tired of living out of boxes!

Oh, goodness thats going to be quite a job to rip out the walls and get to the problem. Is it in the insulation too?
Be really careful when you start to saw into the walls, as my husband was sawing thru the ceiling in our house in Maine to make a better trap door to the attic, when he sawed right thru a wire!  What a noise and a lot of sparks.
But he needed to replace some of those wires anyway, so this was the 'incentive'.
