Ooops! Unexpected flight at air show....
« on: March 11, 2010, 06:53:43 AM »
Crowd was only supposed to see Cold War bomber taxi down runway.
http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=TGjPu6...feature=related

Retired pilot talks through what went wrong. The two-mile runway at Bruntingthorpe, not far from where I live, was used by the RAF during WW2 and then the USAF during the Cold War.

Outstanding! At least that's where the "co-pilot" should have been... He wasn't a "pilot," he was a passenger! The Feds would probably have fined Mr. Prothero for unlicensed flying, taking a passenger aloft without a proper credentials, failure to report to ATC his departure and arrival, etc., etc....Man, I wish I could have been there! We probably wouldn't have "landed" as soon, however! The scenery around there is so beautiful from the air!!! laughhard.gif

Thanks for the link! salute.gif

From Wikipedia:
QUOTE
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) stated that they will not be conducting an investigation. The causes have been identified as the co-pilot failing to reply to the command 'throttles back', thus resulting in the pilot having to control the throttles himself, resulting in a brief loss of control of the aircraft, causing it to rise. No legal action is to be taken by the CAA against either of the crew aboard XM715 or the operators of Bruntingthorpe Airfield.

However, I can't imagine anybody else volunteering to take the controls with that same co-pilot....

I'd forgotten that Bruntingthorpe is not too far from where I had my "birthday" gliding session a few years back - which is how I got this picture. The Victor is right at the bottom, facing the bottom of the frame.

Well, it't not the best I've seen...looks like the 'thumb' is a little out of focus. Of course, flying around with the engine already failed indicates some lack of forethought... laughhard.gif

Ironically, your idea is probably not far off. Except the "servicing," like Toyota, probably had very, very little to do with it. It was, as you know, failure of the brain connected to the throttle(s) that caused the extra speed. Fortunately, there was still one "driver" in the vehicle... rolleyes.gif Sorry, no offense to any of the injured or dead, but these kinds of "accidents" are very rarely mechanically created. I'm willing to be convinced with hard facts and solid, scientific  evidence, however.

In my opinion, safe driving requires much more attention than most people are willing to give it. sad.gif Be careful out there! eek2.gif

This whole thing is ridiculous in my eyes.
Its so few compared to standard accidents, that it is only Toyota bashing by the media.
Other vehicles have had similar problems. But are they being media-trashed like Toyota? No. How many recalls?

What would you do if your engine raced?  Wouldn't you stomp the brake, and shift it into neutral and shut off the ignition?
Where are we coming to, does the industry have to do this for us.  Will they have to tell us that we have to put the brakes on if a human or dog runs out in the street in front of us?  No we should be able to do it by ourselves.

My dad's old Buick with its state of the art cruise control did this on a regular basis many many years ago. He stomped the brake, shut off the cruise control knob, as the brake was not doing it as it was supposed to, restarted the thing, and then after it did this about 100 times. Removed the fuse.
Gee, cant we helpless humans deal with stuff?
How about Sullenburger, he dealt with something.

And this is a very rare thing, its just been blown way out of proportion, as the media seems to love to do nowadays.
