OS9.1 and lag...slower
« on: July 31, 2003, 12:21:34 PM »
I'm running OS9.1 on my Beige G3 and for the last 5 days it seems to be running slower.....like a slight lag in the Finder and other programs including the internet.

This slowness manifests itself in typing, scrolling, opening folders and docs etc.

I've run Norton's Utilities and DiskWarrior with no improvement.

Key Caps ins not running in the backround. About the only change I made was turning
on AppleTalk for file transfers to my other computer.

Anyone have any ideas?

OS9.1
Beige G3 DT
Sonnet 500 Zif
Internal Zip Drive
40 Gig Maxtor 7200 HD/5 partitions
768MB Ram/VM off
32mb ATI Radeon Mac Edition Video Card

UMAX 2000U Scanner
Iomega USB Disk Burner
ViewSonic 17" Graphic series, GS771 monitor
Logitech Optical USB
ADBMouse Apple Desktop Bus Mouse ll
Wacom Pad
Logitech Wingman USB Joystick

Kelly,

I don't have FileSharing turned on though. I only turn it on when I'm going to transfer some files.

I just have a hunch it has to do with that though Gary. smile.gif

Maybe delete Servers in Start Up items and Recent Servers if used.

Finally, maybe turn AppleTalk off. smile.gif

Gary S, I have a dog-5 connected between my 933s for 'file sharing' etc.
Slow city if you leave 'file sharing' on all the time.

So I believe Kelly's correct.
Might not be exact but my money is in that house somewhere.

Bill,

I just checked and Filesharing is turned off on both computers.

Jeez, I hope it isn't my Hard Drive or some thing. I'm thinking it's a software issue of somekind.... Just don't know what it is . sad.gif

Gary, ya might try cleaning your cache and optimizing/defragging. Other guesses:
Verify that there is nothing in the Start up folder that is trying to launch and run a search on Temp folders(visible and invisible) to ensure there is nothing in these that should not be. Unless these are purged with something like AutoPurge, you may be merely running out of usable disk space. http://www.stimpsoft.com/products/autopurge.html

If you use IE, also check the System Folder/Preferences/Explorer/Tempoary Files. Debris often accumulates therein.

On the bright side, if none of this works, all the more reason to get a new G5.

Kelly,

There was nothing in Servers in Start Up items and Recent Servers.

I did find these 2 files in my File sharing folder in the System Preferences folder and trashed them. 9.1 Utilities CD PDF, Emergency 9.2.2 PDF. I think they refer to my 2 bootup Utilities disks I have with Norton's, DW, and, other utilities. Wierd. wacko.gif

Both files had dates of July 27th 2003, right around the time this started.

I trashed those 2 files and it didn't do any good.

Tommorrow I'll do what Harv suggested about trashing my caches and see what happens.
I'll rerun Norton's and DW too.

I'll see if it makes a difference.

I emptied the Caches for Netscape and Explorer and trashed those 2 files and then Shut down and Ran Norton's DD and Speed Disk and then ran DiskWarrior and rebuilt the Desktop.

It's still lagging. It seems like it's looking for something. There's even a lag in typing on the Keyboard!

Maybe I'm missing something. Thinking.gif

Gary, More desperate attempts (guesses)--

1. Disconnect all peripherals except keyboard and Apple mouse.
2. Shutdown so that you may then boot up from a cold start.

I am hoping that your machine is somehow polling/pulsing or is experiencing some corruption with a  peripheral device and that is what is causing the slow down.

Problems still there?

Harv

P.S. Have you tried trashing the Finder preferences?

Harv,

I disconnected all my peripherals except keyboard and Apple mouse and shut down and restarted. I didn't notice any difference.

I trashed the Finder prefs and restarted and I still don't see any difference.

The keyboard lag is the thing that bothers me the most. I wonder if it would help if I trashed the keyboard prefs? I guess it's worth a try. I shall return.

Trashing the Keyboard prefs didn't do it either.

Maybe it will heal itself. smile.gif

You know how System 9x kind of does that sometimes.

I have a logitech optical cord mouse and the scrolling with the wheel is fine but when I use the side bars to scroll, it's hurky jurky.

We'll see.  wink.gif
