Fed Up with Facebook?
« on: February 20, 2019, 09:15:21 AM »
Here is a review of how you might use Slack with your family and friends. Slack was mainly designed for a company to help everyone on a team work together. Glenn Fleishman has written a "Take Control" book on how to use the app and offers some reasons why it could replace Facebook with your family. Whether you can succeed in a the fight with the inertia of lazy, data-security-challenged people is probably the source of several dozen other books. :whistling:

I'm preparing to dump FB yet again. I don't have many family or friends who want to talk to me, so it's not a job I want to tackle. :laughhard: Just getting people to use BCC was enough of a battle for me. :whoosh:  :wallbash: Frankly, I suspect FB will die of government regulations before people will take control of their own data.

I sometimes wish to dump FB also, but some people use it as their only way to communicate, so for them, I have to use it.
And on the positive side, I have placed dogs with new families, and we have rescued dogs who have gotten loose or run away within hours, and have connected up with local people who are amazing photographers. And dug into the history of some of our towns, and posted very old and wonderful pictures.
On the negative side, there is so much crap on FB, and hitting home, there is a private island and beach near my brother's house and its about the only place we can take our dogs to swim in summer unleashed. Thanks to FB, now people who do not live here have discovered it and come with many dogs, some are aggressive, and the people neglect to pick up the poop. And they park on the private road, and leave food and drink containers, and broken glass on the beach area.

So thats my take on FB, its one of those 'sort of necessary' things that probably wont go away.

The content on FB is not the problem, except for the lack of authentication in ones "news feeds". The problem is the lack of understanding of what FB is doing with the data they collect on everyone who uses the app. The vast majority of users still think that they are customers of FB. :wallbash: :whoosh: :wallbash: :whistling:

If you've read any of the recent news reports, you don't need to be a FB member for them to collect data on you, and some of it is what I'd call very personal.

I walked away from FB just last week, and I don't know if I'll go back. There's a few family photos I want to grab, but I can describe them to the "kids" and have them email them to me. Otherwise, I don't miss FB, and I sure don't miss being told I have to allow someone else to make that decision regarding dumping things either in the trash or into the give away box.

In my not-so-humble opinion, :p it's time for FB to go away completely.

I would certainly dump it if it wasn't for the dog rescue and the photography stuff.
Ive gone thru it to limit my information as much as is allowed. There was a huge instruction thing on the web somewhere last spring on how to do that.

Jane, it's not just your settings at FB that matters. FB is tied into several other apps and have garnered personal info on folks who are NOT EVEN MEMBERS OF FB! So not being a member of FB, doesn't mean beans if you're using any of those other apps.

I try to avoid those apps, let me know which ones, so I can see if I'm vulnerable.
Thank you!

As this is something I was not aware of, that they share this info.
If you have a list of these offending ones, I would love to have it.

Jane, just search for FB news on any tech site and you'll find the articles. It's been in the tech news for around a week now.

Jane, you simply need to google:
https://www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&safe=active&ei=GJ10XOzDA4bI-gTDnYqQAw&q=apps+that+share+data+with+facebook&oq=apps+that+share+d&gs_l=psy-ab.3.0.0i131j0i22i30l3j0i22i10i30j0i22i30l5.56766.62742..64711...2.0..0.69.1085.19......0....1..gws-wiz.......0i71j35i39j0i67j0j0i20i263j0i3j0i131i20i263j33i22i29i30.4QjGuB3n7GY

I couldn't begin to list all the apps as more are showing up almost every day. Kayaking app, health apps, TripAdvisor, and of course instagram since FB owns them (but not everyone knows that). Some are android only, others are not. Regardless, FB is playing dirty with everyone's private information.

Actually, it's been "in the news" for years. But "facts" seem to get in the way of what people want to believe.

TripAdvisor is the only one I use now.
I remember last year somebody here sent the Facebook sharing list and I went thru it then.
If there is something Im really interested in, I use DuckDuckGo.

And there is a big pile of WSJs in the living room which I havent read yet! Busy weekend around here for sure.
(Power out as well from the high winds, top of Mt. Washington had 171 mph winds, only around 60 here.)
I will go thru the updated lists again today, thank you.

When will they stop?*

* Never, as long as they are making money. Only $15 billion the first 3 months of 2019...
