<< Spy-Satellite Photos Released By The UN Which Prove The Case For War Against Iraq >>

Amazin Stuff!

________________________________________

Note - I was only able to visualize the photographs via IE 5.1.6.

Mozilla 1.2, Netscape 7 and Opera 5 were all no-gos.  It may have something to do with plug-ins (Shockwave?) or Java or Javascript - I do not know.  I have left the Webmeister a note.

Since Linux doesn't have IE..*grin, I found a way to view the files as the separate images they are.

 Directory Listing

Click a slide00#_images###.jpg to view it then use the back button to return to the list for another choice.

But, I also think there are some coding errors on the part of the creator. I can actually view the first slide with Mozilla as it uses the OpenOffice Impress program to translate PowerPoint files. But when counting the images in the directory list above, there aren't enough to complete the show. If the show completes for IE users, then there must be some other images somewhere else on his server.

Diana,

You got a lot farther on it on Linux than I did!  I can now see the damning photographs - proof!, proof! I say -  on the site you set up, on my Linux machine.

On original site, I could see all the photograhs via IE 5.1.6 running on a Mac, except photograph #5 - just a black page on that one.

I spoke with the originating Webmeister.  As I understand it, the pictures are a Powerpoint presentation which he posted on his web site using Microsoft software on a Macintosh.  That his web site does not require Flash or Shockwave plug-ins, but that he does make use of Javascript.

He expressed surprise that the presentation did not work on multiple browsers, but not a whole lot of interest - stating that Microsoft browsers are in use by perhaps 95% of the web population, that it would take him hours to set it up so that the remaining 5% could see it, and that he would find it difficult to find the time.

I tried the usual couterarguments - all very civil - I think, to little avail.

Ah, well.

His approach is understandable, but I don't have to like it.

If you are a commercial web site, it makes financial sense to take the extra effort to make your site accessible to every last customer that you can.

If your web site is something of a lark, one can understand a more casual attitude.

To me this is just another example - similar to the example of the Opera browser not loading the Microsoft web site - of Microsoft intentionally crippling the effectiveness of competing software.  Nothing new, here - just longstanding consistent corporate policy.

Regards,

Epaminondas

FWIW:

With IE 5.2.2, OS 10.2.4, all slides except #5 appeared normally. Slide #5 appeared with the small red circle (with a white X in the center), circumscribed in a white box.

With AOL 10.2.1, The text on slide 1 was viewable, but none of the pictures (or text) were. All had the small icon-a square box with pink triangle, a green ball, and a blue square therein.

Hi Harv,

Your experience with AOL was exactly what I experienced with Mozilla.

Epaminondas:
While it may be true that IE comprises 95% of the Internet browsers in use, it bears remembering that AOL users are also a HUGE percentage of surfers and the AOL for mac browser won't work on that page. Wonder if the AOL for pc browser will work.     If not, that should cause the site owner some concern.

see ya, (gotta get some work done today     or I'd make him a new page and send it to him.     )

Netscape 4.75  OS 9.2.2,  works fine, except for slide #5.

Well whaddya know - he fixed it!

I referred the Webmeister to this page - perhaps it had some effect.

I can now view the Iraq satellite reconnaissance evidence via AOL/Mac 5.0, and even on - drum roll - Mozilla on Linux!

Just goes to show - whenever you cannot utilize a web site on the platform of your choice, let the Webmeister know.

Sometimes he might actually listen.

Diana - a special thanks for your efforts on this one.  I think they may be what did the trick.

Regards,

Epaminondas

I hope the site owner knows what a good thing he did. It sure helps the flow of the pictures to get to see them all in order without the interruption of the back button.

I agree with Bill..."now those were funny."

Thanks for the pat on the back Epaminondas, but you were the one who took the time to write him, then convince him of the value of the fix.

see ya,

Follow-up - below an email note from the Curator, reproduced with permission:

<< Hi Epaminondas

I now have one of the top 10 Google links for "Spy Satellite Photos," ahead of ABC News.

"More Americans get their spy satellite photo news from the Museum of Conceptual Art."

Thanks for the feedback.
