I got the router and cables in
« on: March 28, 2003, 04:37:00 PM »
Progress report:

I got the D-Link router installed, drilled two 1/2" holes in the floor and have internet service on both puters and it seems to working alright!    getting those heads on those cables though the  1/2' holes wasn't easy....poor drill bit.

Thanks for everybodies help. This is my first thread post on OS X.2.

i haven't partitioned yet or anything...now that we have internet service on the G4 I'll get to the hard drive management later.

I have to go to my beige unit, my son want to play a game on the internet.

I'm back on the beige unit.

Now he's in the other room playing Medal of Honor on the G4 and he's blazing away and here I am posting at TS! No more standing in line.

The D-Link 604 Router was plug and play. We'll see if it holds up but like I say, plug ang play-no software or anything.

Well, it's a little late, we didn't know you were going to be drilling holes in the floor. We could have told you to use only a square bit for doing that - makes it a lot easier to get those ethernet plugs thru there!

BTW, did you put some duct tape around the wiring to help cover the holes? That finishing touch is what sets a professionally done project off, you know!    I always hammer in some long skinny nails along any cable run along and down a wall. Just drive them in enough to hold, then give them a good whack on their side to make them fold over and hold the cable in place!

I couldn't find the square bit, otherwise I'd have used it.

This house has wall to wall carpeting in all the rooms. Underneath are Maple floors with a pine tounge and grove for a subfloor. The house was built in 1953-all dimentional lumber. I think they must have milled the boards on site.

I cut slits in the carpeting right next to the cove molding and fished the cable though to the basement. As I'm securing the cable to the joists in the basement I noticed a knot in the cable.
So I had to fish those RJ45e connectors back up and start all over.
I'll get the duct tape out next week.

I attached them to the joists with those plastic coax cable deals with the one nail on them. It worked out real well. Not only does it keep them up there but they aren't too tight against the cable. You can actually still slide the cable if you need more. I had a 50' roll so I had about 15' left on both sides. Pretty nifty The cable was rated at 350 Mbs and it seems to be fast.
