Microsoft 98 Office manager
« on: April 28, 2003, 10:08:00 PM »
After upgrading to Mac OS 9.1 Office manager cannot be customize.  I can open all applications that are currently there as well as the about office manager icon and help. Only the customize icon does not work.  Same thing happens when I try to customize it from the control panel.  When I go back to 8.6 it works consistently.  I looked at the MS upgrade site but didn't see any fixes.
Power PC 7600 w/sonnet G4 upgrade.

Have you tried the Combined Updater for Office 98?

Thanks for the info, I tried the combined updater but no luck.
I didn't see any other updates to download.  I  tried searching other sites but no luck.   Some must have  a 7600 with 9.1 and  Office with no problems with the office manager.   I don't know what else to try , I tried re-installing Office but no change.

Pete. I think you should throw it all away and start over.

Remove anything related to Office.

Including Control Panels, Extensions and Preferences.

You could put it all in a seperate Folder instead I guess.

Kelly, Thanks for the reply.  I have a second HD which was blank , I loaded OS 9.1 and MS Office 98 only and I.m still unable to customize Office manager.  When I click on customize, nothing happens , I don't get a customize window.  I can get a window for Office Manager Help and About Office manager. I can also open the applications that were loaded with the installation.  I don't know what else to try.  I can either live with it as is or go back to OS 8.6.

Hi Pete. Found this. It's only in Google Cache.

Issue: The Microsoft Office Manager (MOM) can be                               used to access Office 98 applications                               when running OS 9. However, users will                               be unable to customize the MOM menu.                               This includes both normal users and                               those defined as Multiple users.

Workaround: Hold down the control and command (apple) keys while launching the MOM control                               panel. Or hold down the control and                               command (apple) keys while selecting                               Customize from the MOM menu.

Kelly, thanks for the info. I downloaded the info, but that still didn't work for me.  Its not really a big problem that I can't customize office manager so if anyone comes up with anything else for me to try would appreciate it . In the mean time should I stumble on something I will update this post.

What version of MOM do you have. There was a new one that works in 9.1-9.2, version 7.0.1.

Pete,

As I recall, Office Manager 98 is a bit buggy, so the problem you are having is not uncommon. I too experienced problems with Office Manager. The following worked for me. Perhaps you too will find this work around to be a superior solution:

1. Move all pieces of Office Manager to the trash, but do not empty the trash (yet).

2. Make a new folder and call it MOM (or whatever). Make an alias of all the applications you want to reside in the former Office Manager and put these in this new MOM folder. Then, put the newly created MOM folder in the Apple Menu Items Folder within the Systems Folder. Now, instead of mousing to the top of your screen and opening Office Manager, you merely go to the Apple. Your apps are now but a click away in the MOM folder.

3. If you are happy with the new MOM in the Apple, empty the trash. If you are not happy, highlight the items in the trash and then click Command +Y (that will "put away" these item to their original location). You may then trash the newly created MOM folder.

HTH
