My previous avatar with the three primary color squares represented my job as an art teacher.

This one is obvious.   biggrin.gif

Mine represents my lifeblood; twasn't for coffee, I wouldn't be allowed in society, never mind polite social circles!

The smile is a change since the wub.gif change in software, much less tension now.. biggrin.gif

airbusdriver and gmann (and any lovers of olde vehicles . . .

Here's the photographic proof of my short but enjoyable summer-career (1949-54) in not-so-mass transportation.

RHP in Glacier in 1954

If anyone is looking for America's most dazzling mountain scenery (an arguable proposition, I realize) don't miss Glacier National Park in Montana and Waterton Lakes Park in Alberta. Breathtaking hardly describes it.

Maybe that's the spark for a new OT thread: America's Most Scenic Vacations

gmann  With just a litttle encouragement I can be persuaded to recount the time, as my sons and I were going in to fish at Kintla, that the water pump on our wagon died at the lake shore . . . that's at the end of a 75 mile gravel road, folks, waaaay above Pole Bridge, Montana (Pop: oh, maybe 4 or 5 hardy souls!). A thrilling automotive experience, let me assure you.

That's a pretty cool picture RHP. smile.gif

I was close to Glacier Park but didn't go.

Spent four days in Missoula and did a bunch of other things.

Went to a Hot Springs. Visited a Buffalo Preserve.

Climbed that little Missoula Mt. Saw the Band Badfinger in a Bar.

Maybe next time.

It's sure a long State to drive across. Not as bad as Texas though.  smile.gif

More Montana Musing . . .

kelly sez "It sure is a long State to drive across. . ." I once had a Montana congressman tell me that no one with any sense would run for statewide office in Montana unless he/she knew how to fly a plane!

Take a look at the map Kelly posted. Just above the "G" in Glacier is where our water pump failed . . . Kintla Lake. I recently read that there are so many grizzlies now around that area that it's closed to tourists. In the Many Glacier Valley, the snow is so deep and the winter temps so fierce, that years ago the Valley's hotels and other installations were completely abandoned during the winter . . . not to reopen until Spring.  No need for any "security" since Mother Nature provides. Anyone know if that's still the case?

Take a look at this, and all its pictures, and ask yourself if you want another year to by before savoring such beauty . . .

Glacier photos

I've known and used a few adjectives/adverbs in my time. but words really do fail one in reflecting on that section of the world.

RHP...that is such a cool picture. On TV just the other night they had a whole special about those buses and how they've been recently renovated and put back in service.

I lived in Boseman for 2 1/2 years and during that time, drove all over the western half of the state going to horse shows. The valley coming up to Kalispell has got to be one of my favorite roads. I drove up through there during the cherry blossom time. Gave myself one good scare on that road too. Started up a mountain road with just a little less than half a tank in my F-150 pulling a two-horse trailer with one horse and enough supplies to last us about 12 days. Figured I had plenty of gas based on the rate of consumption up to that point. Getting late into the evening on a week night, no gas stations to be seen, the needle getting lost in the E. Just as I had warned the mare that she might have to get out and pull, we finally coasted into Kalispell on total fumes. Literally put more gas in that tank than the owners manual said it would hold. *whew*.  blink.gif  In Montana, if you see a sign about this being the last gas station for however many miles, take it seriously...and don't forget to count the extra gas you use climbing those mountains.  biggrin.gif

During that trip, I did start up the road in Glacier, but it was still early June and the road wasn't fully open yet. I had to turn around at the lodge.

Since living in Florida, I've been asked many times if I would ever go back. I say, "you might have to pay me, but it wouldn't be much"  (maybe a nickle or so)   rolleyes.gif

For anyone who might be interested . . . it was a 1923 White, with air brakes.

Great story, Diana.

Face it! You just don't ever get over Montana!

The ones I'm betting you saw on TV were constructed between '33 and '37. Think of it: seventy years old this summer . . . but, of course, they only were on-the-road from June 15 to September 15 during each of the years until they were so unwisely "retired". Thank goodness somebody had the presence of mind to decide to bring them back. The one in the picture I drove in '54 only for special tours, or friends of the bus company's owner . . . what an experience.

I love that bus!
I visited Glacier Natl Park on the way to Banff back around 1958-9. The Rockies are awsome to eyes used to older rounder worn-down mountain chains like the Appalachians.
At that time everything seemed pretty wild to me, an Eastener. Just driving along, you'd see a moose a little ways off the road with huge antlers.
In Calgary, saloons were divided into two rooms; one for women & one for men. Some people there in Calgary kept their perishable food in a dug out place in the ground covered by a trapdoor. Wow.
I hope our wonderful national parks will be taken care of always.

How does one get a smilie, like the one at the bottom, to act up on an outgoing letter in MAIL? I have dragged a "mover" to the desktop of my iBook and mailed same to my daughters. The "mover" is stationary on my machine and the Macs that receive it. However, one of my girls also has a PC and informed me that it moves when she views it on the PC.

AmicusE

One of our "gif gurus" will have to explain why, but my experience has been about the opposite . . . my Mac correspondents usually see the animation, some WINfolks do not.

Your mileage may vary

I speculated that it may have something to do with how you "save" to your Mac the gif you've seen somewhere . . . but then what do I know? (Not much!  wallbash.gif )

Do you use your mouse to select, and then choose the Save Image As . . . option with the dropdown menu, or do you just click-and-drag to your desktop? It may only be my  random good luck (read = superstition) but I think the former works better.

Inserting a saved gif into a given e-message is merely a click-and-drag operation. Send yourself a "test" messsage with a gif inserted to see if works when you receive it, rather than merely observe the draft before dispatch.

Richard, I also do the former, which seems to work everywhere.
For the .gif gurus indeed to say why. wink.gif
I considered an avatar but don't want one.
If I did, it would a variant on one of the many UN logos.

Mac OS X Mail doesn't play well with animated gifs. In my experience, you have to use something like Netscape/Mozilla Mail to get animations to work correctly.

Most likely there is a preference that needs to be checked. In Eudora there is a specific box to check to have gifs animate in email messages.

Go through your preferences in Mail and look for something like that.

RHPConsult, Bruce F, Krissel: I'm using an iBook in OS 10.2.6 and can only drag to desktop. Selecting a smiley seems to be something I can't do and I don't have an option to "save image as" using, as I do, Safari. I sent a test java script:emoticon(':wallbash:') to myself in MAIL and received a stationary icon. I also checked preferences and didn't see any that were applicable, again, in MAIL. At this juncture, I'm inclined to agree with Bruce F in that MAIL "doesn't play nice" in this situation. I suppose this is all much ado over very little and thank you for your replies. All the best.
